I had recently an experience with my sister, who has early onset dementia, that may be valuable to others. She has been a resident of a Sunrise facility in Washington and she has also been taking care of her two small dogs to whom she is very attached. However, the care taking task has been difficult for her as her disease has progressed. Recently, we took the dogs to the kennel for a couple of days in order to clean the rug in her room. Her caregivers and I were very concerned with her being apart from the dogs for that period. However, after the first day she was only mildly curious about where they were. As opposed to being distraught, she has seemed somewhat relieved. We have not returned the dogs and all is well. Because of her long attachment to these animals, I was totally surprised and also relieved.

I have been a big fan of the book and watched the movie for the heck of it and I’ve got to say, that was one hell of a movie to watch. I was nearly on the edge of my seat when watching My Sister’s Keeper. I knew about the story plot and everything, but never did I anticipate me getting teary at the end. The movie is a simply must see movie. For those you haven’t watched it yet, I recommend watching it.

For Idell Pardun, it is very easy to agitate a person with AD. There are many techniques to avoid these problems. Since memory loss strips the person of some of their experiences, the same tasks can seem new to the person. Every patient has their likes and dislikes so maybe going with those things that the patient already likes is preferable and may help to avoid the agitation. Our support groups have many people willing to share their techniques with you. Attend one or contact a group leader or our office with any questions.
